Notes from Nowhere

The Badlands

Badlands

I’ve heard from a couple of folks asking how the Badlands got its name. Now that I’ve been there I know. Two reasons. 1) Biting black flies. Not your average biting black flies, like those you might find these days along the Colorado River down in the Grand Canyon. No, these biting black flies are on a combination of steroids and meth. And I’m begging you, no matter how badly you may have to, don’t go trying to use one of the handful of honey wagons in the Badlands. Yes, I made that mistake. Think The Three Stooges trying to take a leak in a shark tank. 2) Not nearly as tragic or annoying are the Wall Drugs signs. Dozens in just the hour or so drive from Rapid City to the Badlands Loop Road.

Aside from that… (Don’t miss the 20 second video just past the photos)
