Pulling Off To The Side Of The Road
About a week ago, on a lark and just to see what would – or wouldn’t – happen, I submitted myself to the state of Utah for a volunteer role as a campground host. A day or two later, I received an email from the park manager/ranger at the Escalante Petrified Forest State Park saying he could use my help. Huh, I thought. I checked out the park online and it’s located in the middle of the most beautiful part of this most beautiful state. (I happen to be in Utah these past 2-3 weeks.) Long story short, I’ll be a camp host at that park starting as soon as Monday, maybe a week later.
The deal with Camp Host positions, a volunteer job at all state and national campgrounds in the country, is that they provide a free campsite, in this case a full hookup (water/electric/sewer) site, in exchange for your time. The work is basically facilitating check-ins at a set of campsites, ensuring that each site is ready for the next campers once the site is vacated, and making sure restrooms in my area are clean. I’ll also be involved (because I want to be) in trail maintenance, maintaining/upgrading signage and some website-related stuff.
My commitment to them is initially 6-12 months. If the Park in question were anywhere else in the state, I likely wouldn’t have followed through, but this is a relatively new and all-in-all awesome one. And there’s a petrified forest! And a reservoir stocked with fish. Very exciting 🙂
The manager/ranger that I’ve been emailing with (Chad) is interviewed in this local news video https://www.abc4.com/news/southern-utah/escalante-petrified-forest-state-park-freezes-geology-in-its-tracks-in-garfield-county/.
That’s it for now.
