Notes from Nowhere

Not The Who

For some, it’s outright impossible to kick the intensely self-destructive political news habit. Especially this year (and especially 4 years ago, and especially 8 years ago, etc). As ever, it feels like everything is on the line. Well, everything is on the line. Everything is on the line every 4 years – and nothing is on the line.

Unfortunately, nearly everyone’s focus during presidential elections is on the who rather than the what. The ‘what’ happens behind the scenes and it happens every day. The what is almost never considered as it slithers silently along its glass-like, shit-lined channel just below the nearly-impossible-to-ignore din and clamor of the who.

Supreme Court and other judgeships that manage to steal a little spotlight away from the who around this time of year, especially when vacancies occur so close to November as in this and other recent presidential cycles, are the rare exceptions and, likewise, hardly matter.

No, I’m referring to the momentous yet under-the-radar horrors perpetrated on all American citizens whether they realize it, care about the issues or understand them, or not. These daily abominations are harmful, hurtful, unpatriotic, cynical and personally enriching for a tiny handful of powerful, connected, mostly obscenely wealthy individuals.

It really truly hardly matters who occupies the White House. (The Supreme Court matters a bit more, but their cases are few and far between.) Each of the (paltry 2) major parties fail us miserably where who/what is concerned. (Maybe 2024 for a viable third party? Let’s hope so.) The unseen and/or ignored are the what, and the what is king. Focusing and obsessing on the who blinds you to the real prize. It pollutes your mind with the flotsam and jetsam of political campaigns and those behind the scenes are delighted.

Get your minds out of the who gutter and do your best to understand – and obsess over – the what. Say it with me: “It doesn’t matter who wins this election.” If you care about that, ‘they’ win and we all lose.

Unfortunately, my time for acting on the what is at its nadir. But I’m fully committed to not caring one centimeter about who wins this presidential election and doing what I can to wake folks up. It’s not easy. Here goes again anyhow… you, who may be younger, smarter, better positioned and/or financially more secure – yes, in America that matters in big important things like this – please, for the sake of the children as they say, keep your eye on and strategize your actions around the prize – the what.

Hi Mark, glad you’re off and running or driving and hanging out as you go. I remember John Madden the CBS analyst who never flew. He was transported via a retrofitted greyhound bus and he said on several occasions that there’s a lot of land in this country that is uninhabited and he was surprised by just how much is he traveled from city to city . I’m sure you’ll find that as you go. Good luck keep us posted. All is well here in New Jersey. Stu

Thanks Stu. I’ve traveled a lot in my life but almost always for work. I’ve been everywhere and seen nothing. Now it’s finally time to see it. And live it.

[…] Plan is to pick up the trailer from Mesa on Nov. 1 or 2 and disappear off-grid into the wilderness – possibly somewhere inside the Tonto National Forest in Arizona or the Gila National Forest in New Mexico. The goal is to remain off-grid as long as possible without knowing who won the election. […]

Is Brock a viable third party alternative? Happy to pitch in an try and add some momentum to a more viable 3rd party if there is one

Was dumbfounded when Sanders ran as a Democrat rather than a 3rd party candidate in 2016. He would have been the best chance for a viable new choice since Perot. Don’t know who Brock is since JCCAIDC, but I doubt it. If he/she was, it wouldn’t be a question. It would be obvious and they would already have shaken things up in some appropriate way(s). I’ll check Brock once I emerge from the wilderness in mid November. In the meantime, why don’t you consider running. You know you’d have at least two votes 😉 (Three if you can get Nick registered.)
