Notes from Nowhere

Just a Carnival Sideshow

white walker

Four years ago on this day I attended an election night viewing party at my friend Lori’s house. I went in convinced that Trump had won and I was the first to leave the party once the initial couple of results came in.

This year, my plan was to disappear into the wilderness by November 3 and stay out there as long as possible without knowing who won the election. Unfortunately, due to scheduling issues with trailer repairs, I won’t be able to leave this sordid business behind until Thursday.

Lori very generously opened her home to me both times – including right now – that the trailer’s been waylaid in Mesa at the service center. 4 years later to the day, then, Lori and I – and one or two other friends – will once again be watching the life-sucking circus that is election night media coverage in a Presidential election year.

The difference for me this time is that I’m so emotionally and even intellectually removed from politics that I really feel that I don’t have a dog in this fight. The kind of revolutionary change required to meaningfully address the big issues of race, climate change, healthcare, education, women’s rights and other life-and-death struggles we face daily will not result from a Biden win. Not even close. Not even a little bit.

The Democratic party is so broken that it cannot be fixed. And the Republicans are no more than a gang of zombie White Walkers edging America and the world closer and closer to humanity’s final breath. I won’t have to face very much of the lead-up to that bitter end, but the next generation, or the one after that, will. Sadly, they don’t appear to know what’s hurtling toward them at frightening speed. They don’t have the capacity or curiosity to see beyond “Beat Trump” apparently.

At a minimum, we need a viable 3rd party whose candidate will have the means and the chutzpa to light the way for the millions of young people it will take to right this leaky, rat-infested, fast-sinking ship.

Simply defeating Trump is not going to get us there. It’s going to take so much more. This Presidential election is nothing but a sideshow in light of what’s coming – soon – and what will really be required for humanity to save itself.

Take if from an old carney who knows a sideshow when he sees one.
