Accidental Tourist
I recently spent two weeks just outside Taos which has been on my list for many years. I don’t know exactly what I expected, but Taos 2024 was definitely not it. Maybe I’m unconsciously comparing it to places like Santa Fe or Tucson, but what I found was just a dusty, uninteresting, claustrophobic little town.
Then I headed to Boulder, UT, a favorite spot. En route I spent a night outside Moab and woke up to a flatter than flat trailer tire. First trailer flat in four years. I always carry a little tire inflator and, luckily, the tire held its air long enough to get to a shop in Moab. Turns out I badly needed new wheel bearings which I topped off with a new set of tires.
I suddenly had a few hours to kill and Arches National Park was pretty much right there. I typically don’t do tourist stuff but boy am I glad I did this time. Not that I needed more evidence of Utah’s singular gorgeousness, but this place was astoundingly beautiful. My eyes could have imploded at any moment. Just when you though the show’s over, you turned a corner and wham. I only got out of the car to take pictures then right back in the car, so only saw two arches of the hundreds that are out there. That’s OK. Arches schmarches. The place was glorious either way.
Pictures can’t touch what it’s like when you’re there, but I took em, so I’m posting a few.
