Notes from Nowhere

Antelope Canyon X

Antelope Canyon is a ‘slot canyon‘ that’s been generally available to tour since the mid 1980s. The Upper and Lower canyons have operated tours the longest and so have multiple companies working them resulting in crowds and haste. That’s why I chose Canyon X. One company, less traffic and slower paced.

The image above is a bird’s eye view of the canyon. Here’s what it looks like from ground level. Not so interesting looking, yes? (As always, click any/all for full resolution)

As we descended into the canyon, I noticed what looked like a snippet of sandstone in the shape of a chess piece…

Yup, an ancient knight.

Here were the first few images I took in the canyon itself…

Here is the ‘X’ that this portion of the canyon is named for. I didn’t quite capture it as you can see. Just squint a bit…

Our group passed another guide was was doing a very entertaining and interesting geological magic trick demonstrating how slot canyons form over billions of years. Would have been better as a video, but they specifically forbid video for some reason.

Around the same time as the demonstration, I noticed what looked like wildlife hugging a rock…

Cute moth…

A few more snaps…

I had to do a doubletake before shooting this sign. Officially my favorite sign ever…

On arriving home, I thought this would help demonstrate how amazing this particular camping location has been. That’s the rig dead center…

You have a “rig”. I think that makes you way cooler than anyone who doesn’t have a rig.

    That canyon is also cool.

That sign is also, also cool.

Just a reminder… If you’re anywhere around Durango this summer / fall come visit. I’ll be gone for a couple of weeks in June but other than that we’re here and would love to see you. steve@burns-sf.com.

Hi Steve – Thanks for staying in touch. I’ll be spending May and June heading north into western Canada for a chunk of the summer. I’m already north of Durango in Utah, but will try to hit Durango on my way back down. Sounds like you’ll still be in the neighborhood. Let’s keep talking. Please have a few dinners for me at Himalayan Kitchen 🙂 (But watch out for the Chicken Saag. Sometimes it’s perfect and sometimes, well, not.)
